Great political turmoil in the world body that governs the Underwater Hockey, CMAS, came to a head soon after the 2006 World Championship, resulting in-CMAS Underwater Hockey Commission members resigned en masse and soon thereafter formed 'world body governing 'alternative purely for sport UWH, known as Aquachallenge World Association (WAA), and officially confirmed on the 1st WAA World Championship in March 2008. Therefore, from this point UWH community has two governing bodies world:
1) CMAS, the world continued to organize international competitions in alternate years. CMAS has been trying unsuccessfully to hold Underwater World Games event in 2009 following a successful event in 2007. This is intended to be a multidisciplinary event including UWH and other sports under their governance, as finswimming, free diving, orienteering and other water first World Games were held in Bari, Italy in 2007 and the two were scheduled to Tunisia in 2009 but was canceled and occurring in only UWH event in Kranj, Slovenia in August 2009. It was billed as the World Championships but only one non-European countries to compete (South Africa); France won the Open division while Great Britain took the title Women. In the years between World Games CMAS holds Zone Championships (eg to-12 European Championship in Istanbul, Turkey in 2008).
2) WAA, try to continue with the original World Championship series held in alternate years. 1st WAA Championship (renumbered - it will be 15 CMAS) was held in 2008 in Durban, South Africa. Game 2 is scheduled forMedellin, Colombia in August 2010 but it proceed as WAA International Events without sanctioning and is a precursor to the development of independent American International Cup.
World (WAA) and Europe (CMAS) events were held over the split exact same period in 2008, the continent apart. This dichotomy tournament CMAS coupled with the possibility of future sanctions that led to many countries forced to choose which race to send their team to. As a result, not competition in 2008 was well attended as had happened in previous years, not as a competitive .. After that, there is no agreed WAA events have occurred since 2008 and
In 2009, the new CMAS Underwater Hockey Commission was appointed for a period of four years to guide the sport at a technical level and gradually they have reconsolidated sport and produce development plans to accommodate future growth. Commission continues to strive to develop relationships with CMAS Board and seek support for their development plans.
As part of this plan developed Age Group Commission on International Championship incorporate under 19, Under 23 and Masters (over35 Men, Women Over 32) Grade. The championship was held in July 2011 in Dordrecht, Netherlands. The event is to be approved by the CMAS but the Dutch team organizers withdrew their offer hosting and continue to host the event was a success with 36 teams participating. As the event does not comply with this procedure Scotland Competition CMAS enabled to compete as a separate country rather than in the combined entity as Great Britain.
17 The CMAS World Championship was held in Coimbra, Portugal in August 2011, saw an increase in participation from non-European countries. Eighteen teams, including Australia, Canada, Colombia, New Zealand and South Africa took part.
Plans are underway for the 18th World CMAS Championship was held in Eger, Hungary in August 2013. This event will look at all grade Age Group and Elite Men and Women compete. The expected number of teams is between 60 and 80.
