Although the sport has only been competed and has not yet achieved high performance, Indonesia's national underwater hockey team is targeting gold at the 2019 SEA Games in Manila, Philippines.
More than one hundred athletes took part in the Underwater Hockey National Championship held by PB POSSI and opened on Tuesday (4/30/2019) at the Aquatic Stadium, Gelora Bung Karno Complex, Senayan.
The total was followed by 15 provinces from all over Indonesia who sent their respective representatives.
The National Championship is also one of the pre-selections for the 2019 Manila SEA Games, in November while waiting for the coach who came from Australia to arrive in Jakarta.
"Actually this is just pre-selection, there will be a selection of national training waiting for coaches from Australia to come," said the Jury, as well as Jakarta Underwater Hockey athlete, Andhika Gerald Dariano to City News, Wednesday (1/5/2019).
"If now we see at what level their ability to play, fitness, skills and understanding of this sport to what extent," added Andhika.
Andhika, who is more familiarly called Darren, admitted that it was very helpful to see which players had the potential with this National Championship.
"Underwater Hockey has just entered the SEA Games this year so it has become a boom in the eyes of swimmers. We take advantage of this opportunity to find new training members so we can help us at the SEA Games later," he explained.
Although he has not yet started official training camps, Darren, who is a subscriber of the Underwater Hockey Indonesia national team, is targeting to win a gold medal at the SEA Games next November.
But further Darren also admitted that the competition map in Underwater Hockey in Southeast Asia was still controlled by Singapore and the Philippines which began to overtake.
In fact, the two countries have started training camps for their national teams, plus the complete facilities and infrastructure of water sports in the two countries.
"The target is, of course, the gold medal. The competition map is indeed Singapore, the most dangerous one. They are indeed intense and very extraordinary," said the 21-year athlete.
"The ones to watch out for besides Singapore might be the Philippines, yes. They have started training centres and we have not started yet, but yes we remain confident," he added.
On the other hand, the underwater hockey athlete who has crossed the Asian Championship also hopes that the government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports can directly assist the preparatory process for the 2019 SEA Games.
"And we really need help from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, we need certainty to prepare to win gold in sea games. We didn't come to play as a complementary team. Indeed, the target is gold," said Darren.
