Singapore's Underwater Hockey Team is Above All
Both the Singapore men's and women's team - fined alone financially - won the first gold medal in the sport, making their SEA Sports debutSingapore's underwater hockey team made history yesterday when men and women won the first two gold medals in sports, which will make their debut at the SEA Games.
The team defeated the Philippines 5-0 in the 4x4 final at Vermosa Sports Center on the outskirts of Manila. The women followed with a 4-2 win over the Philippines to finish double.
A men's victory may look like a landslide, but national male coach David Lambert insists the Philippines is a great outfit.
"It's hard, Filipinos really work hard at home. But they have a strong game and this is a real team effort," he said in a telephone interview with The New Paper.
"They have many locals who support them and the atmosphere is strong. We can hear them cheering even under the water."
Lambert congratulates captain Jonathan Chan and vice-captain Jerryl Twang for leading the team to victory.
He said: "Captains are great at leading teams. With their enthusiasm, teams work together and produce gold."
Also known as squid, this sport originated in England. Both teams wore snorkel masks and used 35cm sticks to push brightly colored balls into the opponent's goal.
Singapore's victory is extraordinary because no one has become a full-time athlete. Of the 12 male teams, 11 are professional workers, and one is a student.
Chan, a pilot, praised the team for their commitment.
The 34-year-old player said: "We are self-financed and are on leave to work abroad. If a coach is not available, I will fill it.
"I am very proud of the children and how they played in the finals. We came out at the right time and played together when it was important."
Women's team deputy captain Sheena Soh echoes Chan's sentiments. The 28-year-old actuary links the team's success with perseverance and passion.
He said: "My teammates and I have full-time jobs, so some try to practice before and others after work. I am fortunate to have a boss who supports my journey, and it pays off."
"I am also very grateful to the Singaporeans who came to Manila to support us. Hearing their cheers really encouraged us to give our best and win."
Both teams have the opportunity to sweep because they are also at the 6x6 event, which continues today.
But the two coaches gave up.
Lambert said: "We only take game after game ... focusing on the present and the present.
"We have practiced a lot. It will be challenging, but we will fight a lot."
Female coach Lena Plambeck said: "6x6 is a completely different match, so we will go in and hope we do our best."
