Playing Hockey in the Water With Jakarta Underwater Hockey
Hockey Both on land and on ice, this one sport must be familiar to our ears. But have you heard underwater hockey? Although the title is quite self-explanatory, it turns out that this sport is not as easy as playing hockey underwater. It requires physical endurance and also good teamwork. Moreover, this water sport turned out to be quite a lot of fans not only in the world but also in Jakarta. Last week the Tupperware Men team visited Senayan Swimming Pool to chat with Shasa Sigit, one of the organizers of the Jakarta Underwater Hockey. For those who are curious, let's refer to the thrill of finding out about this unique sport!
What is an Underwater Hockey?
Sports Hockey is a hockey that is done in the water, which is at the bottom of a swimming pool. The depth varies from 1.5 meters to 3 meters. Initially, this sport was discovered in 1950 in England. At that time there were some scuba divers who in winter could not do outdoor sports. Finally, they tried to do sports indoors, namely in the swimming pool (indoor). Finally, they tried to play hockey in the water. This sport used to be called 'Octopush' because the players (who use their legs and arms) move were similar to an octopus. While the addition of the letter 'h' at the end of the word is wordplay to form the word 'push', referring to the activity of pushing the hockey puck in the water.
In Indonesia, this sport only appeared in 2010. We (Jakarta Underwater Hockey) have entered the 5th year and were initially introduced by Chris Sahad who had joined one of the underwater hockey teams in Singapore. When he returned to Jakarta, he began to build teams ranging from 3 to 4 people and then continues to grow until now with a total number of members of more than 300 people, varying from students to employees. But there are still 40 people who are actively playing.
For the Jakarta Underwater Hockey club, we don't have many branches in Indonesia. At the moment we are just starting a pioneer in Jogja, around 10-15 people are consisting of UGM and UNY students. Apart from that we also introduced to several other cities such as Semarang and Bandung.
Is this sport a sport that is contested in the Olympics?
Worldwide this sport has not yet entered the Olympics. But underwater hockey has its own international championship, with participants coming from all over the world. In 2016, there will be an Underwater Hockey World Championship in South Africa. For in Asia, there is also the championship itself, the Asia Underwater Hockey Championship (AUHC). The first time we joined the AUHC was in 2011, precisely in Singapore. Then in 2013, we also took part in the same event as host Manila. And this year, we will be the hosts, precisely in November. Participants came from Singapore, the Philippines, Japan and China.
Can you explain, what are the tools needed to play underwater hockey?
There are several tools used in this sport. Starting from the head there is a snorkel to breathe through the mouth, equipped with a mask to see in the water. Then there is also a polo cap that is used to protect the head, especially the ear which is vulnerable to stick or puck. For the legs we use fins, frog legs are used for swimming. The fin that we use the back closed, while for scuba diving is usually open. There is also a glove, for one of the dominant hands (used in play). There are two types of sticks, namely fibre and wood. Of course, we also use a puck made of metal, weighing 1.8kg, and covered on all sides by rubber so that it can move at the bottom of the pool.
The pool used, the average used size of 20x25m, can also be 15x20m and 15x25m. But what we use is only the wide side of the pool, not the elongated one. Like other hockey sports, we also have a goal. The goalpost is at the bottom of the water, made of metal, with a height of 80cm and a width of 3m placed from end to end.
What preparations are needed?
The basis of this sport is good swimming skills. The most often we use is freestyle, so hand and foot coordination must be good. Besides, physical endurance and strong breathing are needed. Therefore, before the game, we get used to warming up, then swim, then practice breathing. There are two warm-up exercises, the first is 'BOGDAT', which stands for 'Breath Once Go Down and Touch'. So after taking a breath, we go down into the water to the bottom of the pool, then touch the bottom of the pool, up to the top, and so on. Then there is another breathing exercise which is also called 'apnea', by swimming from end to end with just one breath.
We are indeed required to hold our breath firmly in the water, but that does not mean to hold our breath for long. In the game, we just stay in the water for less than a minute, take the breath up and then go down again.
Are there any conditions if you want to join Jakarta Underwater Hockey?
New members will be included in the beginner category and will be given an introduction related to this sport for approximately one month. After one month, if the mastery is good, members can enter the novice / intermediate category.
New participants will be lent masks, fins, snorkels, gloves and sticks. But it is advisable to bring personal equipment because our tools are limited. Especially for fins, the size of each leg is different, we don't necessarily have a certain size here. The first month to two months can use club-owned equipment so that members are not too rushed so they are not wrong to buy because the equipment tends to be expensive.
Every month we charge a fee of only Rp. 75,000 per month, only for the cost of renting a pool, because club members do not need to buy tickets at the ticket window. At the beginning of every month we open registration for new members through social media, be it Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and blogs
Come on, what are you waiting for? If you are interested in joining, you can check on the Jakarta Underwater Hockey Facebook page, or via Twitter and Instagram. Those who are still curious, can watch their videos on Youtube or chat directly with them by coming to the Senayan Swimming Pool (near Kridaloka Park) every Monday and Thursday at 7 pm.
